On September 13, 2024, KEPSA, through the Jiinue Growth Program, successfully hosted a half-day validation workshop for the 2024 SME Policy Index at the Serena Hotel, Nairobi. The event brought together key stakeholders from Kenya’s SME sector, including representatives from the government, private sector associations, financial institutions, and civil society organizations. The workshop focused on the SME Policy Index, a tool developed to assess SME policy frameworks in emerging economies and monitor their progress. The discussions centered on identifying gaps in Kenya’s policy implementation and using the findings to foster informed Public-Private Dialogue.
Ms. Mary Ngechu, KEPSA Director in charge of SMEs and Start-ups, stressed the importance of including enterprises in policy discussions, as they form the foundation of the SME ecosystem. She called for greater SME involvement in shaping policies, urging stakeholders to collaborate rather than compete. Ms. Ngechu also celebrated the achievement of forming a dedicated ministry for SMEs, a milestone in improving the regulatory environment for small businesses.
Mr.Reynold Njue; MSEA Assistant Director, Planning and Research, highlighted that MSMEs are one of the five pillars the government is focusing on, with initiatives in place to support access to finance, decriminalize informal work, and enhance capacity building. He emphasized the importance of understanding the SME Policy Index and exploring collaborative efforts to better support MSMEs.
The workshop provided valuable insights and feedback, which will be instrumental in refining the SME Policy Index. The event marks a crucial step toward shaping policies that promote SME growth and contribute to Kenya's economic development. KEPSA extends its gratitude to all participants and looks forward to implementing the recommendations from the workshop, ensuring continued support for SMEs across the country.
