On 4th October 2023, KEPSA participated in a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Symposium organised by Colleges and Institutes Canada which focused on planning and launching mentorship services in Kenyan TVET institutions, with a special emphasis on the mentorship of female trainees. KEPSA was represented by the Education Sector Board Vice Chair, Ms Priscilla Kerebi.
Ms Kerebi emphasized the crucial role of mentorship and role modelling in nurturing the potential of female students in Kenya's educational landscape. Highlighting KEPSA's commitment to education and fostering diversity and inclusion, particularly in the context of gender equality, she underscored the importance of role models in inspiring ambition and demonstrating the mindsets and behaviours needed to rise. She also urged collaboration and collective efforts to create a nurturing environment for female students, promoting mentorship and building a network of role models to empower the youth to reach their full potential.
Ms Lynda Kasina, Project Manager at Kibondeni College conveyed a powerful message, challenging the misconception that Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) is reserved for individuals who have failed. She emphasized that TVET is, in fact, a pathway filled with promise, potential, and opportunities for innovation and skill development. Encouraging the youth to embrace TVET proudly, she underscored its capacity to shape a prosperous future given effective mentorship and with the right role models. The symposium, according to her, symbolized the collective commitment to ensuring success for young individuals on this impactful educational journey.
The symposium highlighted the necessity of effective mentorship to strengthen the quality and relevance of TVET systems in Kenya, especially for underemployed or disengaged youth.
