On 21st November 2022, KEPSA CEO Ms Carole Kariuki joined the Deputy President of Kenya H.E Rigathi Gachagua together with other top government officials in the launch of the 2023 Drought Flash Emergency Appeal by United Nations (UN) in Garissa County. The launch aimed to spur and further heighten the collective efforts in response to the drought situation in Kenya.
Present during the event was H.E Nathif Adam – Garissa County Governor together with his Wajir Counterpart H.E Ahmed Abdullahi; Cabinet Secretaries Hon. Rebecca Miano (EAC, ASALs & Regional Development) and Hon. Alice Wahome (Water, Sanitation and Irrigation): Dr Stephen Jackson – UN Resident Coordinator in Kenya; H.E. Inger Andersen, Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme; Other government officials including local leaders and representatives from Kenya Red Cross Society and UN Agencies.
KEPSA in partnership with stakeholders from Red Cross, Rotary and the development partners led by the UN has been actively supporting the Government in responding to the drought menace through the Pamoja Tuungane initiative.
Speaking during the launch, the Deputy President said that the government is grateful for the support it has received from development partners led by the UN agencies and the private sector in tackling the current global humanitarian challenges. He also emphasised the Government's commitment to finding both short-term & long-term solutions to the ongoing drought.
"This year's drought has affected more than four million people in Kenya. It is for this reason that today, I chaired a roundtable of both state and non-state actors in Garissa County, to find lasting solutions and response to drought in the ASAL regions of Kenya," said Deputy President H.E Rigathi Gachagua.
The launch was preceded by a roundtable discussion on drought, water and the environment which was chaired by H.E the Deputy President. The leaders also witnessed a Mass Screening and Treatment activity for malnutrition cases at the Maalimin health facility and later a Food distribution exercise at the same facility.
