KEPSA participated in Deloitte Entrepreneur Summit held on 27th July 2023 in Nairobi. The summit was the first to be held in Kenya by Deloitte. It presented an opportunity for private companies and investors to engage in one-on-one meetings with investor groups with the aim of promoting the development, growth and upscaling of organizations, businesses, as well as the larger Kenyan economy.
In her opening remarks, Ms Gladys Makumi, Partner and Financial Advisory Leader at Deloitte noted that despite the challenges faced in East Africa including political uncertainty, currency depreciation and increasing inflation, there's still room for growth and sustainable profitability in the region.
Ms Flora Mutahi, KEPSA's Immediate Past Chair, in her remarks, recognized the critical role of collaboration between the private sector players in driving economic progress and promoting sustainability. She continued to highlight that a strong and dynamic private sector is crucial for achieving inclusive and sustainable economic growth as it serves as the engine that propels economic development forward.
“The Entrepreneur Summit propels us to think beyond today, towards a prosperous and achievable tomorrow. Entrepreneurs can gain a competitive edge, expand into new markets, acquire new technologies and skillsets through a merger and acquisition-led growth strategy,” said Mr Temitope Odukoya - Financial Advisory Leader, Deloitte Africa.
Mr Sunil Shah, Director at Glacier Products Limited outlined what entrepreneur companies need to attract private equity funding including a solid growth plan; effective communication; up-to-date detailed financial records and good cashflow management; and a good financial advisor.
The forum also comprised an engaging panel discussion that gave transaction insights into the entrepreneurs’ investment cycle and the importance of financial advisory services for entrepreneurs as they learn how to manoeuvre their way in the business environment. It addressed key issues currently impacting mergers and acquisitions, company advancement activity and capital markets.
The summit continued into breakout sessions where KEPSA members had meetings with investors and held discussions on how best to position their companies and improve the business environment.
