KEPSA, represented by the Security Sector Board Vice Chair Mr Cosmas Mutava, participated in the 2nd International Conference on Counter-Terrorism in Public Spaces that was held in Nairobi. The two-day event, which kicked off on 27th September 2023, discussed the private security's role in responding to terror threats and ensuring public space safety. The meeting was convened in a joint collaboration between The European Union (EU) and the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC).
In his remarks, Mr Mutava gave an overview of some of the terror threats that have faced Kenya as a country and the impact of those attacks. He also noted that Kenya is witnessing an alarming increase in cyber-attacks directed towards the business sector.
The private security industry in Kenya has grown significantly in response to security threats. Numerous private security firms have been licensed to operate across the country, providing a wide range of services, including guarding, surveillance and access control.
Private security firms play an important role in complementing the efforts of the National Police Service. While it is the work of the police to focus on large-scale security concerns, private security firms handle critical roles in protecting public spaces such as malls, hotels, schools and residential areas.
On the technological front, private security companies continue to invest in technology which includes surveillance cameras, access control systems and alarm monitoring to enhance their capabilities.
In July 2023, KEPSA and NCTC renewed an MOU that was signed in 2019 to ensure that the two organisations collaborate in the capacity building of KEPSA members. Through the collaboration, 2759 private sector members have been trained in the last 5 months.
Mr Mutava concluded his presentation by noting that private security plays a pivotal role in responding to terror threats and ensuring the safety of public spaces. He said that the dedication, training and tireless efforts contribute to the country's overall security. He also encouraged the continuous collaboration between both public and private sectors to create safer and a more secure Kenya for all its citizens and visitors.
