KEPSA represented by the Chair of Environment Water and Natural Resources Sector Board, Ms Emily Waita and KEPSA nominee to the process Ms. Faith Ngige, participated in the first multi-Stakeholders Consultations Working Group to End Plastic Pollution in Kenya in the context of the ongoing negotiations that took place on 23rd May 2023 at Nairobi Safari Club. The meeting organized by the Ministry of Environment Climate Change and Forestry and the Center for Environmental Justice and Development (CEJAD) aimed to engage stakeholders on policy and legal matters, plastics production, consumption patterns and waste management in order to help develop Kenya strategic priority areas in preparation for the next series of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee meetings
In March 2022, the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-5.2) adopted a historic resolution (5/14) to develop a legally binding instrument on plastic pollution with the aim to complete the negotiations by end of 2024. The instrument is to be based on a comprehensive approach that addresses the full life cycle of plastic. The Resolution established an Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) to develop the legally binding agreement.
On 13th May, 2023, UNEP released the first document of options inputs drawn from views expressed during INC1 and submissions from member states. The document attached provides a basis for establishment of multiagency team to deal with diverse issues raised in the UNEP document and subsequent negations.

The meeting brought together actors in the plastics value chain including producers, waste service providers, recyclers, private sector, government, environmental conservation organizations and civil society. The working team will support the national focal point in the development of a strong national position to address critical national, regional and international issues in the negotiation of the global plastics treaty. The second session of the intergovernmental negotiating committee to develop the internationally legally binding instrument on plastics pollution including marine environment (INC-2) will take place on 29th May to 2nd June 2023 in Paris France.
