On 20th April 2023, KEPSA Foundation in partnership with Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE) hosted a sensitization and awareness creation breakfast meeting on combating disinformation in the private sector. The meeting focused on the cost implications of disinformation to businesses, disseminating the study on Combatting Disinformation in the Private Sector and raising awareness on the importance of a Fact-Check Unit.
Speaking during the forum, KEPSA Foundation Executive Director Ms Gloria Ndekei thanked CIPE and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for their support. In the priority area of Governance, she said that the Foundation is committed to the establishment of a business Fact-Check Unit within the KEPSA Foundation, citing the vices of disinformation. She also committed to having an inclusive process in the establishment through a collective approach; enhanced sensitization and awareness of members and stakeholders.
Ms Ndekei requested for strengthening of the Unit through a dedicated staff and a strong research team while underscoring the importance of partnership for support and ownership of the process and eventual development of a private sector policy on disinformation and a code of ethics for prevention, accountability and compliance, leading to the establishment of a Business Fact Check Unit within KEPSA Foundation. She added that it was important to do a study to have knowledge of what had already been done to avoid starting from scratch.
The findings of the survey on Combatting Disinformation in the Private Sector were presented by Mr Michiel Omondi, CIPE Consultant. He noted the need for a multi-stakeholder approach in the fight against disinformation, pointing out the criticality of transparency and accountability of all the involved stakeholders for the fight to succeed.
During the plenary session, several concerns were raised which include; the tools to be used in fact-checking, the need for a clear legal framework that distinguishes freedom of speech from disinformation, the platforms to which the factually proven information will be given to the national and foreign consumers and how the fact check unit will match up to the speed at which disinformation spreads.
In his closing remarks, KEPSA Director Eng. James Mwangi appreciated participants for their active engagement and encouraged the creation of awareness on combatting disinformation to other sector players for a cohesive and unified front to the fight against the vice. He stated that disinformation is a social, political, and economic challenge that requires all hands on deck for effective results.
The forum was attended by Mr Roly Davila, Chief Technical Advisor, UNDP; KEPSA Director Mr Mucai Kunyiha; among other KEPSA leaders and private sector stakeholders.
