On 19th April 2023, Rotary District 9212, through KEPSA Foundation, donated Ksh. 3.3 million to the National Steering Committee on Drought Response in fulfilment of a pledge made by the organization as part of the private sector response to the drought situation in the country. The donation was presented by Ms Azeb Asrat, District Governor 2022-2023, Rotary District 9212, and received by Mr Murimi Murage, Senior Advisor in the Office of the Deputy President & Secretary to the National Steering Committee on Drought Response, in presence of the KEPSA Foundation Chairperson Eng. Patrick Obath and Executive Director Ms Gloria Ndekei in Nairobi.
“With the pledge that District 9212 made back in October 2022 during the high-level meeting hosted by His Excellency Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Ksh. 3.3 million is now to be donated and spent on food and other basic requirements to support the affected communities,” said Ms Asrat in her opening remarks during the handover ceremony. She noted that Rotary continues to partner with the Government of the Republic of Kenya, KEPSA and other partners to support the affected communities and at the same time, look into medium-term and long-term rehabilitation and sustainable development interventions.
Eng. Obath on his part, noted that the KEPSA Foundation has over the years implemented various initiatives in response to community needs in various faculties including peace-building, gender equality and sustainable business. He noted that KEPSA Foundation was happy to receive the donation from Rotary while adding that beyond partnering in alleviating the impact of drought in the country, the Foundation will advance possible areas of collaboration with Rotary in terms of delivering some of the community-based interventions.
Ms Gloria Ndekei in her rejoinder thanked Rotary for honouring the pledge and hailed the Office of The Deputy President of Kenya and the National Steering Committee on Drought Response for executing the drought response initiative with an aim of looking for sustainable solutions to end drought emergencies.
The National Steering Committee on Drought Response was formed by an Executive Order of the President in 2022 to work with both the national and counties in strengthening the national capacity for resilient recovery to protect development gains from recurrent drought.
Mr Murage said that for the last five months the steering committee has been operating, it has managed to raise about KES 1 billion through the help of individual and corporate well-wishers. “We are currently in the fourth phase of distribution and have distributed food to approximately 1 million needy persons,” He said. Mr Murage added that the food distribution program has covered 32 ASAL counties and will be rolling out the fifth phase of distribution soon.
The event was attended by Mr Leonard Ithau, District Governor Elect, 2022-2023, Rotary District 9212; Mr Tito Tadeo, District 9212 Strategy, Planning, M&E and Policy Advisor Chair; Janet Mathenge, District 9212 Community Services Chair 2022-23, among others.
