KEPSA participated in the Environment and Land Court (ELC) - Milimani Court Users’ Committee (CUC) meeting held in Nairobi on 22nd February 2024. The meeting chaired by Hon. Lady Justice Anne Omollo MBS, focused on the validation of ELC – Milimani CUC Guidelines (2024) and facilitating public participation on the ELC Act (Amendment) Bill, 2023.
The main objective of the CUC Guidelines (2024) is to provide a regulatory framework for the cooperation and collaboration among national and county governments, State and non-state agencies engaged in the administration of land and environment justice in accordance with the Constitution, statute law and international treaty instruments binding on Kenya. The core objective of the ELC Act (Amendment) Bill, 2023 is to enhance the effective and efficient administration of the Environment and Land Court.
The Hon. Lady Justice briefed the meeting on the initiation and advancements of the Nairobi Land Justice and the Environment and Planning Working Groups; the realization of alternative justice systems by benchmarking in Ngong Law Courts; the invitation for individuals to join as mediators or express interest in addressing land-related matters and the upcoming Open Day event scheduled for 7th March, 2024 and extended her invitation to all.
Overally, the meeting provided a comprehensive overview of the current status and progress in various aspects and served as a platform for informed discussions and collective efforts towards addressing pertinent issues in the realm of land and environmental matters.
