KEPSA led the private sector at the technical workshop held in Naivasha from 11th to 15th March 2024, focusing on the Ending Drought Emergencies Common Programme Framework II (EDE CPF II). The workshop was organized by the Ministry of East African Community and the State Department for the ASALs and Regional Development, highlighting the private sector's commitment to addressing pressing socio-economic and environmental challenges in Kenya.
Represented by Dr. Jackson Koimbori, the Senior Circular Economy and Climate Change Coordinator, KEPSA contributed significantly to discussions aimed at creating a nation resilient to drought risks. The workshop provided a crucial platform for stakeholders to deliberate on strategies to enhance resilience and mitigate the adverse impacts of drought on livelihoods and development.
The decision to develop the EDE CPF II stemmed from the recognition that despite efforts made under the first framework, ending drought emergencies remains an unfulfilled goal in Kenya. The mid-term review (MTR) findings highlighted the need for more robust actions and better coordination among stakeholders, including the private sector, to effectively address drought risks. Key recommendations from the MTR emphasized the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration, integration of county governments and the private sector, and the establishment of policy frameworks for drought risk management.
The achievements of the first EDE CPF, such as the institutionalization of multi-stakeholder collaboration and the establishment of enabling policy frameworks, laid a strong foundation for future efforts. However, the EDE CPF II aims to build upon these successes by further integrating county governments and the private sector into governance and coordination frameworks. Additionally, the emphasis on knowledge management and dissemination of innovations underscores the importance of leveraging collective expertise to strengthen resilience efforts. KEPSA's involvement in shaping these initiatives reflects its proactive role in driving sustainable development and fostering resilience in Kenya's communities and economy.
