On Wednesday, July 3rd, the 2024 CSOs Voluntary National Reviews (VNR) Programme was launched at the Movenpick Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya. This significant event, aimed at assessing and enhancing progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within Kenya's framework, saw participation from various distinguished guests and stakeholders. Among those present was Dr. Jackson Koimbori, the Senior Circular Economy and Climate Change Coordinator, who represented the Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) and delivered the opening remarks. KEPSA, as a crucial member of the Inter-Agency Technical Working Committee on SDGs, has played a vital role in shaping the 2024 Voluntary National Review.
The event was graced by several notable individuals and organizations who have been instrumental in the SDG journey. Special appreciation goes to Ms. Florence Syevuo, the Executive Director of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Kenya Forum, for convening this important gathering. Other key stakeholders included members of the Inter-Agency Technical Working Committee on SDGs, representatives from various NGOs, civil society organizations, and development partners. Their collective efforts and unwavering commitment to the SDGs have been crucial in driving Kenya’s sustainable development agenda forward.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Koimbori highlighted KEPSA's dedication to sustainable development and the significant contributions made by the private sector. He emphasized the importance of a multi-stakeholder approach to achieving the SDGs, reflecting KEPSA's commitment to fostering public-private partnerships. "Imagine a world where all 17 SDGs have been attained and achieved—would we have war, hunger, floods, poverty, or would we finally run out of things to complain about on social media?" Dr. Koimbori remarked, capturing the essence of the ambitious goals set by the United Nations.
KEPSA's involvement in the development of three pivotal reports—the 2024 Voluntary National Review (VNR), the 2024 Voluntary Local Review (VLR), and the 2024 CSOs Voluntary National Review (VNR) on SDGs—has been instrumental. By providing valuable insights and expertise from the private sector, KEPSA has significantly contributed to these comprehensive assessments. Through numerous consultations and workshops, KEPSA has ensured that the business community's perspectives are well-represented, emphasizing the importance of incorporating diverse viewpoints in the pursuit of sustainable development. Additionally, KEPSA's contributions to these reports highlight local-level progress and challenges, demonstrating their dedication to driving positive change at the grassroots level. This collaborative effort underscores KEPSA's commitment to fostering inclusive and sustainable development across Kenya.
Looking ahead, KEPSA is excited to announce the upcoming ‘2024 Private Sector SDG Award Ceremony’ in October 2024. This prestigious event will honor CEOs of KEPSA companies for their outstanding efforts in SDG implementation. The award ceremony aims to recognize and celebrate the significant strides made by the private sector in advancing the SDGs. Additionally, KEPSA plans to hold a joint Pre-COP29 meeting during this engagement, further emphasizing their commitment to climate action and sustainable development. These initiatives reflect KEPSA's proactive approach to fostering innovation and collaboration in the pursuit of a sustainable future.
The launch of the 2024 CSOs Voluntary National Review (VNR) Report marks a pivotal moment in Kenya's sustainable development journey. KEPSA remains steadfast in its commitment to advancing the SDGs through robust partnerships and strategic initiatives. With continued cooperation and innovative solutions, significant progress can be made towards creating a prosperous, inclusive, and environmentally sustainable future for all Kenyans. As KEPSA prepares for the 2024 Private Sector SDG Award Ceremony and the Pre-COP29 meeting, the organization looks forward to driving even greater impact in the realm of sustainable development.
