KEPSA participated in the Supreme Court@12 Conference, which was hosted by the Supreme Court of Kenya to celebrate 12 years since its inception. The three-day conference, which kicked off on 4th November 2024, brought together judges, legal scholars, practitioners, and other key stakeholders from across the country and beyond. KEPSA was represented by its CEO, Ms Carole Kariuki.
Over the past decade, the Supreme Court has played a pivotal role in shaping Kenya's judicial landscape, safeguarding the Constitution, and ensuring that justice is served for all Kenyans. The conference served as a platform to reflect on the Supreme Court’s journey, celebrate achievements, and explore the future of justice in Kenya.
At a panel session on 6th November 2024 on the Role of Development Partners in Supporting the Realisation of the Constitutional Social Justice Promise, Ms Kariuki noted that KEPSA’s partnership efforts have significantly contributed to reducing economic disparities, a cornerstone of social justice. Through initiatives such as the Business Advocacy Fund, supported by various development partners, KEPSA has driven policy reforms that reduce regulatory burdens and improve the business environment for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
She was joined by Ms. Ann Gitonga, Head of Policy and Partnerships, International Justice Mission (IJM); Ms. Julie Matheka, International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) Kenya, and Mr. Felix Odhiambo, Executive Director, Electoral Law and Governance Institute for Africa (ELGIA), as panelists in the session that was chaired by Hon. Justice Mohamed Ibrahim, Judge of the Supreme Court of Kenya. The session discussed the role of development partners and the private sector in balancing support and sovereignty, collaborating with the government to promote justice, and successful approaches and initiatives to advance social justice.
The conference officially opened on 4th November 2024 by Hon. Lady Justice Martha Koome, Chief Justice and President of the Supreme Court of Kenya, graced by top government officials led by H.E. Dr William Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya. Chief Justice Koome assured Kenyans of the Judiciary’s commitment to justice, promising to champion the Constitution and the rule of law. “I want to assure Kenyans that the Supreme Court of Kenya will stand rock-solid as a constant guardian of the Constitution and the rule of law,” she said.
During the opening session, President Ruto urged the Judiciary to exercise restraint on national and public interest matters to prevent individuals and groups whose goal is to advance their sectarian agenda. He emphasized that the Judiciary has a role to play in helping the country curb politics of personality, ethnicity, and populism and promote politics based on issues and programs.
