KEPSA, as a member of the Inter-Agency Technical Working Committee under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Directorate of the National Treasury and Planning, participated in the retreat to develop Kenya’s National SDGs Acceleration Strategy (2022-2030) that was held from 6th to 11th March 2022.
Since the adoption of the SDGs in 2015, the Government of Kenya has made commitments towards the attainment of the goals. In this regard, a number of milestones have been achieved. SDGs have been mainstreamed in Government policy documents at both national and county levels, awareness creation undertaken, capacity building and sectorial programs have been carried out. To track progress, Voluntary National Reporting and Progress Reports on the implementation of the SDGs have been prepared among others.
Ms Sarah Muui – Director, SDGs Coordination Directorate said that the reports indicate that there is a need to undertake more transformative actions to accelerate the realization of Agenda 2030. In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the implementation of all goals undermining progress made affecting significantly the lives and livelihoods of the vulnerable groups and pushing more people to poverty.
The need for the strategy is informed by deliberate measures required to recover from the pandemic as well as the need to design measures to accelerate the realization of ending poverty for all and realization of sustainable development. Private Sector has a key role to play in the recovery of the economy and in acceleration actions. In addition, coordination and reporting of the implementation process should be enhanced. Once the zero draft is finalized, the strategy will undergo stakeholder consultations and validation.
