On 29th June 2022, KEPSA participated in the Portugal and Kenya Business Forum co-hosted by H.E President Uhuru Kenyatta and his counterpart H.E Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa in Lisbon, Portugal. KEPSA was represented by Mr. Jas Bedi – KEPSA Vice-Chairperson who is also the Chairperson of Kenya Export Promotion & Brand Agency (KEBROBA).
The high-level meeting brought together Kenyan and Portuguese captains of industry and entrepreneurs to explore opportunities for business partnership and investment in Kenya and the southern European nation.
Speaking during the ceremony, President Kenyatta rallied Portuguese investors, entrepreneurs and captains of industry to make Nairobi the fulcrum of their business interests and investments in Africa. He said Kenya’s immense commercial potential, in almost all sectors of the country’s expanding economy and the cosmopolitan configuration of her population, make Nairobi the ultimate destination for Portuguese investment.
“We are a melting pot where we welcome people from all parts of the world so long as they come in peace. So long as they come in the name of trading, working and working together, we welcome people,” Said President Kenyatta.
The Kenyan head of state regretted that despite the two countries having a long history of bilateral ties, the volume of trade flow between Nairobi and Lisbon remained low. On the available investment opportunities in Kenya, President Kenyatta encouraged Portuguese investors to consider tapping into the country’s thriving ICT, health and infrastructure sectors.
Speaking at the forum, Mr. Jas Bedi noted that Kenya has the needed infrastructure both human and natural sources. “Kenya welcomes investments from Portugal in sectors of agriculture, Manufacturing and Blue Economy,” He said.
Other Kenyan speakers at the meeting held at the historic Antigo Museu dos Coches (Lisbon’s coach museum) were Dr. Wilfred Marube – KEPROBA CEO, Ms. Olivia Rachier – Kenya Investment Authority (KenInvest) CEO and Eng. James Kung’u – KenHA CEO.
Also present at the meeting was Amb. Raychelle Omamo – Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Najib Balala – Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Principal Secretaries Amb. Johnson Weru (Trade), Ms. Nancy Karigithu (Shipping) and Dr. Chris Kiptoo (Environment).
The business meeting was organized by KenInvest and its Portuguese equivalent, AICEP Portugal Global, to explore business partnership and investment opportunities by Kenyan and Portuguese captains of industry, entrepreneurs and business leaders. The two institutions signed an MOU to help strengthen bilateral trade and investment relations between the two countries.
