On 10th May 2024, KEPSA and its members participated in the National Tree Growing Day countrywide. In Embu County, KEPSA joined the county leadership and the Ministry of Investments, Trade and Industry (MITI) in a tree planting exercise in Irangi Forest, Manyatta Ward which is in line with the presidential directive of national tree-growing activities in honour of the victims of the floods.
Mr. Victor Ogalo, the KEPSA Deputy CEO, led the KEPSA team in the exercise at Irangi Forest Station. He accompanied H.E Cecily Mbarire, Governor of Embu County; Hon. Rebeca Miano, Cabinet Secretary for Investments, Trade and Industry; Hon. Alexander Mundigi, Senator of Embu County; Mr Alfred K'Ombudo, Principal Secretary for Trade; Mr Abubakar Hassan Abubakar, Principal Secretary for Investment Promotion, among other stakeholders.
In her remarks, Governor Cecily Mbarire emphasised the need to grow more fruit trees which will boost food security and uplift the community economically as a source of revenue. “As we plant and grow trees, let's ensure that out of every ten trees, at least two should be fruit trees,” she noted.
Applauding the private sector's partnership, CS MITI Hon. Rebecca Miano emphasized the need for continued collaboration with KEPSA. She reaffirmed the government's commitment to planting 15 billion trees by 2032, urging the local community and leaders to step up and join the collective effort to safeguard the environment.
Mr. Ogalo mentioned that KEPSA had mobilized its members across the country to take part in the tree growing exercise. He emphasised the urgent necessity of tree planting as a paramount climate solution, offering significant potential to alleviate the adverse effects of climate change on livelihoods. “It's imperative that we take immediate action to cultivate more trees, paving the way for a greener and more sustainable future,” he noted.
During the exercise, Mr. Ogalo also handed over KEPSA’s donation of over 200 hundred seedlings to the County of Embu.
KEPSA has been instrumental in the development of climate change policy and regulatory instruments in Kenya. Through its collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry and the National Treasury and Economic Development under the GCF NAP Readiness Support, KEPSA launched the Private Sector Strategy on Climate Change Solutions (2022–2030) that outlines private sector priorities for reducing emissions, enhancing the resilience of businesses, building their capacities and fostering public-private partnership.
