On 27th and 28th of April 2022, KEPSA participated in the Loop Forum Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, a leading Nordic forum for waste and resource management and circular economy.
The conference brings together public and private Danish companies and institutions involved in circular economy to showcase innovation, design, and sustainability for circular economy.
The Private Sector team interacted with Vice President Circular Economy of the Dansk Return System Ms. Heidi Schutt Larsen, who shared insights on the Dansk Return System model for packaging that has existed for over 20 years and has created a closed loop system for management of PET bottles and beverage cans. The system links producers and consumers through the distributors to return empty bottles and cans at source using a deposit refund model. Dansk return system also works with authorities to ensure that its registered cans and bottles are displayed in the retail shelves.
Mr. Victor Ogalo – KEPSA Deputy CEO – Business, lauded the initiative and its over 95% success rate in collecting back PET bottles from consumers. The system infused mechanism of checking compliance and weeding out free riders is an exemplary close the loop initiative. Kenya can borrow from this system and create a closed loop for management of PET bottles.
KEPSA is a member of the Danish Strategic Sector Cooperation Steering Committee whose members who were on an exchange program in Denmark on various circular economy initiatives including implementation of Extended Producer Responsibility.
The KEPSA Deputy CEO together with the KEPSA Environment Sector Board coordinator Ms. Faith Ngige experienced the refund system at Lydl supermarket.
