On 10th April 2024, KEPSA participated in the Junior Golf Development Program update held at Karen Country Club. Present at the meeting were esteemed individuals including Regina Gachora, President of the Junior Golf Foundation; Nelly Wainaina, Director of Marketing at NCBA; Carol Warui, representing KEPSA; Robert Muthomi, CEO of the Professional Golfers Association of Kenya (PGA(K)); Muema Muindi, Club Chairman at Karen Country Club, and myself, Collins Were, Club Captain.
The meeting discussed collective focus on achieving excellence in golf administration and fostering social interactions among junior golfers. The priority areas highlighted for the program included coaching, junior golf development, traditions, rules, and etiquette, alongside articulating a long-term vision for the junior golf section. Various partners committed to providing value to various segments encompassing juniors, beginners, elite players, and club social golfers.
A significant highlight of the meeting was the launch of the Karen Junior Challenge and the Junior Development Plan. This initiative aims to nurture and encourage junior golfers by offering consistent opportunities to play and compete. Notably, a record-breaking participation of 67 juniors (49 boys and 18 girls) was observed in the inaugural event. The challenge spans seven events over school holidays, utilizing the Longleaf system for fair play.
Insights were shared into our structured Junior Golf Development Program, which comprises the Grassroots Program (Levels 1-5), Intermediate and Advanced Player Development (Levels 6-8), and Elite Player Development (Levels 9-11). Each stage addresses specific aspects of skill development, fosters camaraderie, and promotes long-term engagement with the sport. Aspirations were expressed to affiliate with academic golf institutions globally and sponsor elite players to regional tournaments to enhance their exposure and opportunities.
Plans were outlined for assessments, placement in level groups, and the publication of coaching and practice sessions. The program is scheduled to commence in May 2024, with monthly assessments and tracking initiated by the Junior Sub-Committee..
