On 14th February 2022, KEPSA led by the Deputy CEO, Projects and Foundation, Ms. Martha Cheruto participated in the handover of the Chandaria Langata Women’s Prison Workshop, a project sponsored by Dr. Manu Chandaria through the Chandaria Foundation in partnership with Mabati Rolling Mills Ltd (MRM), Safal Building Systems (SBS), United Nations, KEPSA Women and other partners including Clean Start, Valentines Cake House, Faraja Foundation and Mavazi Elevate Program.
The Langata Women’s Prison has a population of close to 550 inmates, serving various sentences from short-term to long-term with others on pre-trial terms. The majority of these in-mates lack basic skills that they can rely on once they are released. This deficiency has become the main cause of repeat offenders as they are more prone to relapsing to crime-related income-generating activities to overcome the desperation and the stigma that comes with an ex-jail bird tag. It is out of this need that the Prison established Entrepreneurship and Vocational Training on baking and tailoring as one way of equipping the inmates with skills that they can rely on once they are released.
It is from this need that the Chandaria Foundation together with MRM, SBS, KEPSA Women and other Stakeholders, saw it fit to establish a new workshop to add the capacity of the bakery and tailoring side. The new workshop will benefit about 43% of the women in prison.
The Chief Guest was Brigadier (Rtd.) John Kibaso Warioba, Commissioner General, Kenya Prisons Service, accompanied by Mr. Patrick Mwangi Administrative Secretary, Kenya Prisons Service, Mr. Henry Kisingu, Nairobi Regional Commander, Mr. Anders Lindgren, CEO Safal Group, Mr. Vincent Rapando from the Chandaria Foundation, Ms. Mercy Waithanji from KEPSA Women, Ms. Renee Ngamau, Director, Clean start Kenya among others.
Speaking during the event, Brigadier (Rtd.) Warioba appreciated all the partners who took part in the delivery of the project. “I appreciate all of you for sharing in our vision and your valuable contribution to the success of this transformational project. You have indeed added jovial smiles to 480 inmates housed in this correctional facility. The overall objective of this initiative is to strengthen the Government’s capacity to enhance integration, and prevent relapse in crime and empower women in conflict with the law through life alternative opportunities that boost their potential through vocational and entrepreneurship training.” He said.
The Chandaria Langata Women’s Prison Workshop has a bakery and textile and clothing sections which will help the inmates earn an income while still serving their term. On average, the bakery can produce 1,000 cakes and 6,000 doughnuts in a day. It will also help them acquire skills for their future development once out of prison.
