On 16th June 2022, KEPSA leadership, led by the Chair Ms. Flora Mutahi and Vice-Chair Mr. Jas Bedi participated in a luncheon hosted by Dr. Fred Matiang’i – Cabinet Secretary, Interior and Co-ordination of National Government, in honour of the visiting President of the Republic of Zambia H.E. Hakainde Hichilema at the Safari Park Hotel Nairobi.
President Hichilema was in the country for a two-day state visit whereby Kenya and Zambia were seeking to cooperate and complement each other in various spheres. The private sector’s participation in the luncheon was purposed to enhance the search for economic opportunities as well as to enhance trade and investment opportunities between Kenya and Zambia.
Mr. Bedi who spoke on behalf of the private sector expressed KEPSA’s commitment to enhance value chains between the two countries. He mentioned that the Kenyan private sector will continue to scan opportunities whereby they could, either direct investments in Zambia or through partnerships with Zambian businesses.
In the last 25 years, the exports of Kenya to Zambia have increased at an annualized rate of 13.6%, from $1.91M in 1995 to $46.1M in 2020. In 2020 alone, Kenya exports to Zambia averaged USD 46.1 M, while Zambia exports to Kenya averaged USD 36.8M. “The question is how do we sustain this momentum and even increase the performance of our bilateral trade?” Mr. Bedi poised.
The Kenyan private sector was invited to visit Zambia to advance the trade and investment discussions. KEPSA will soon communicate to its membership upon finalization of the scheduling of this investment mission to Zambia.
