On 19th of August 2024, the Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) through the Dual TVET Program, launched the Coast Employers Engagement Series, kicking off in Taita Taveta County. This initiative is set to span across four counties within the coastal region, with subsequent events scheduled for Kilifi County on August 21st, Mombasa County on August 22nd, and Kwale County on August 23rd. This series aims to foster closer collaboration between industry partners and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions to align educational outcomes with industry needs.
The inaugural event in Voi, Taita Taveta County, saw the participation of various industry stakeholders from sectors such as hospitality, mining, and construction, along with representatives from Taita Taveta National Polytechnic and Taveta Technical & Vocational College. The gathering provided a platform for stakeholders to discuss the critical role of partnerships in enhancing TVET activities within the region.
Dr. Ehud Gachugu- Global Director Youth & Jobs and Ajira Digital at KEPSA, the chief guest at the event, delivered a powerful address emphasizing the importance of partnership and collaboration in supporting TVET initiatives. He highlighted the need for capacity building among trainees through work readiness programs, mentorship, and digital skilling. According to Dr. Gachugu, these efforts are essential in preparing the youth for the future of work, ensuring they possess the necessary skills to meet the evolving demands of various industries. Dr. Gachugu also stressed the significance of continuous engagement between industry players and TVET institutions to ensure that the training provided aligns with the current trends and needs of the job market. He called for a collective commitment to equip the region's youth with the skills required to thrive in a rapidly changing economic landscape.
During the Coast Engagement series, KEPSA’s team led by Dr. Ehud Gachugu, also visited Taveta Technical & Vocational College, where they had a productive meeting with the institution’s principal, Mr. David Murungah. The visit focused on exploring areas of collaboration aimed at strengthening the institution’s capacity to deliver high-quality training that meets industry standards.
During the visit, discussions cantered on the need for digital skilling and the importance of equipping trainees with competencies that align with industry demands. The team also explored opportunities to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) within Taita Taveta County's ecosystem, recognizing the crucial role these businesses play in the region's economic development.
As part of its broader strategy, KEPSA identified additional areas of collaboration with Taveta Technical & Vocational College. These include supporting the institution in digital skilling initiatives, enhancing training programs to ensure graduates are well-prepared for the job market, and fostering partnerships that support local SMEs. By addressing these key areas, KEPSA aims to create a sustainable ecosystem that bridges the gap between education and industry, driving economic growth and development in the coastal region.
The Coast Employers Engagement Series represents a significant step forward in aligning industry needs with educational outcomes. By bringing together stakeholders from both sectors, KEPSA is paving the way for a more integrated approach to workforce development—one that ensures the region's youth are equipped with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in an increasingly competitive job market.
As the series continues across Kilifi, Mombasa, and Kwale counties, it is expected to yield actionable outcomes that will further strengthen the collaboration between TVET institutions and industry players, ultimately contributing to the prosperity of the Coast Region.
