On 16th August 2024, the KEPSA ICT Sector Board held a meeting to discuss and receive comments from private sector stakeholders on the development of Kenya’s National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy. Dubbed the KEPSA AI Working Group, the forum sought to identify opportunities, gaps, governance issues and the impact of AI.
The meeting was part of the ongoing engagements championed by the Ministry of Information, Communication, and the Digital Economy, in collaboration with the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data (GPSDD), which is tasked to develop Kenya’s National AI Strategy. As part of this initiative, the Ministry aims to ensure broad public participation and inclusivity through a series of engagements that will be held in different counties across the country.
The primary objectives of these engagements are to foster inclusive dialogue and gather diverse perspectives on the AI strategy; increase public awareness and understanding of AI and its implications; and ensure that the strategy reflects the needs and aspirations of various stakeholders, including local communities across the digital divide - from women, youths, persons with disability and any other marginalized groups.
The KEPSA AI Working Group committed to collate ideas and put together stakeholders’ input which will form a private sector position, to be forwarded to the Ministry for consideration in the development of the strategy.
Some of the issues that emerged from the discussion included;
