On 16th December 2024, KEPSA, led by the ICT Sector Board, held a Ministerial Stakeholder Forum with the Cabinet Secretary for Information Communication and the Digital Economy Dr. Margaret Nyambura Ndung’u. The meeting, which was held at the Teleposta Towers, discussed how the Private Sector and Government can work together to address the key challenges in the ICT Sector. The KEPSA team was led by the ICT Sector Board Chair Mr. Ben Roberts and the Vice Chair Mr. Brian Omwenga.
In his remarks, Mr Roberts addressed issues related to the increase in broadband, which is making it difficult for individuals to work online and hindering connectivity, as well as the Digital Service Tax. He added that resolving the broadband issue would bring fairness to the sector.
On her part, the Cabinet Secretary urged the private sector to draft a position paper on Digital Tax, highlighting its potential impact on job creation. She also identified innovation hubs across Kenya and explored ways for the private sector to collaborate with the government in advancing incomplete ICT projects. Additionally, she emphasised the importance of working together on critical changes in the education sector, particularly through skill development and curriculum review planning.
Some of the issues raised during the meeting included advocacy for startups in Kenya which entailed ownership models for startups, addressing taxes affecting startups as well as support for the passing of the Startup Bill to streamline taxation and promote startup growth. The meeting also discussed the importance of utilising Digital Hubs to drive technological advancement as well as investing in technology to enhance the development and ownership of critical tools, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), within Kenya.
As a way forward, the Ministry and the private sector committed to working together on innovative solutions to address the sector's critical challenges. It was agreed that key takeaways and progress updates will be reviewed in the next meeting, scheduled for January 2025.
