On 10th May 2024, KEPSA Foundation partnered with Mama Doing Good, Chandaria Foundation, Lenana School, KCB Foundation and Global Peace Foundation in planting over 500 fruit trees in Lenana School. This was in response to the National Tree Growing Holiday declared by the President of Kenya H.E Dr. William Ruto.
Lenana School Principal Mr. William Kimei appreciated all the partners and the Dagoretti community who participated in the tree planting efforts, underscoring the importance of environmental sustainability for the next generation. He said that the Lenana School management, students and community are committed to increasing tree cover in the school and building a team of environmentalists among its stakeholders.
The Chief of Staff, Office of the First Lady, Ms. Nancy Salamba delivered the commitment of the First Lady of Kenya, H.E Rachel Ruto, to preserve the environment by planting 500 million trees as a contribution to the national 15 Billion trees by 2032. This is to help increase the forest cover from the current 12% to 30% and mitigate the negative impact of climate change. This has been through partnerships towards establishing Mama fruit gardens and nurseries in schools. She concluded with a quote, 'Someone sits in the shade today because someone planted a tree many years ago.'
KEPSA Foundation Executive Director, Ms. Gloria Ndekei underscored the impact of strategic partnerships, particularly the collaboration with MaMa Doing Good, Chandaria Foundation and Global Peace Foundation in the fruit tree planting exercise.
Ms. Ndekei noted that the partnership with Lenana School started in 2018 through Kijani Initiative where 200 avocado trees were planted. The avocado trees had already yielded fruits and are providing nutrition to the students and also serve as a source of extra income to the school. Additionally, a tree nursery with a capacity of 50,000 fruits, exotic, and indigenous seedlings was established at the school in January 2024 to provide seedlings for the school and the community.
The exrcise was graced by the Dagoretti South Constituency Member of a Parliament, Hon. John Kiarie who appreciated the leadership of Lenana School and other partners that have contributed to the establishment of a model environmental ecosystem that can be replicated in other areas.
Other speakers at the event included; MaMa Doing good CEO Ms. Elizabeth Koskei; KCB Foundation Director, Ms Mendi Njonjo; Global Peace Foundation Director, Mr. Daniel Juma; Mr. Ismail Muktar, Kenya Forest Service and Deputy County Commissioner Mr. Jared Ratemo who underscored the importance of embracing tree planting as a way of life.
