KEPSA Deputy CEO Mr Victor Ogalo met with representatives of African Development Bank (AfDB), the Principal Fragility and Resilience Officer, Mr Bumi Camara, together with a Consultant, Mr Tunji Namaiko on 10th March 2023 at the KEPSA offices. The meeting discussed Kenya’s vulnerability and resilience assessment which will feed into the AfDB’s Country Strategy Paper that informs the support strategy of the bank for vulnerable and fragile countries in Africa. The meeting further discussed the sources of the vulnerabilities and the opportunities for addressing them.
The KEPSA Deputy CEO shared that the country's political, economic and environmental pillars are the most vulnerable and require the most support. He cited the need to help countries stabilize politically as a way to enhance economic growth hailing the Mkenya Daima Project as a model to be emulated by African governments.
Mr Ogalo further shared that African countries including Kenya need deliberate support to run export-led growth while managing the dire debt situation in most African countries. He requested the bank to support the advancement of the technical capacities in advocacy institutions such as KEPSA.
In conclusion, Mr Ogalo cited climate change, especially the drought ravaging Northern Kenya as a major vulnerability in the country while calling upon a complete change of attitude in responding to the data from the metrological department. He also shared on the projects within KEPSA that support business greening including the Sustainable Inclusive Business (SIB) and the Climate Business Information Network (CBIN-K).
AfDB supports fragile and vulnerable countries by addressing the causes of their fragility to attain sustainable development.
