On Monday, September 9, 2024, the Energy and Petroleum Sector Board visited the Kenya Airways Facility in Embakasi. The aim of the visit was to learn more about their operations with a focus on sustainability practices as well as identify potential partnership avenues that would realize an enabling business environment within the energy sector. The delegation was led by KEPSA Energy and Petroleum Sector Board Vice Chair, John Njogu and Haig Anyonyi, Director Safety, Quality and Environment at Kenya Airways.

Key Points to Note

• Kenya Airways has taken several strides in enhancing business sustainability by minimizing operational footprints such as waste recycling and developing a fly-net zero program by incorporating biofuels and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
• Under waste recycling, one of the innovations implemented is the Fair Innovation Hub, which turns waste from planes into various products such as bags, seats, and other household items. Additionally, all the products are made by the local communities which has increased employment and development among the locals.  
• While focusing on recycling, Kenya Airways is developing a Pyro-diesel Plant through a Start-Up that mainly produces diesel from plastic waste with the potential of reducing fuel costs by about 50%.
• An exploration into bio-diesel through a start-up is being undertaken to ensure reduced emissions with the goal of attaining net-zero emissions. Additionally, in support of the project, Kenya Airways has converted its tree planting initiative to planting only energy crops which will enhance biofuel production.

Agreed upon Action Items

• A follow-up of the air-transport implementation plan under the Kenya Energy Transition & Investment Plan 2023.
• Education on tax compliance and business sustainability for the various locals within the Fair Innovation Hub.
• Development of a matrix that highlights the challenges in the aviation space, which will guide further engagements.
