On 6^th May 2022, KEPSA Education Sector Board leadership; Dr. Vincent Gaitho – Sector Chair, Ms. Wairimu Njagi – Vice-Chair (Basic) and Ms. Priscilla Kerebi – Vice-Chair (TVET) met at the Nairobi Serena Hotel to take stock of the Sector Board’s first quarter progress as well as explore alignment of the 3 subsector strategies. The leaders resolved that in the next seven months, the sector focus will be:

1. Craft a National Education Agenda that aligns Education with Kenya’s Economic Development agenda and a coordination framework for all stakeholders to address academia-industry skills development gaps.
2. Plan for a National Association of Private Universities and KEPSA breakfast meeting to highlight the progress made by private universities and discuss more effective ways of advocacy and collaboration for higher education.
3. Conduct a TVET subsector analysis of existing accredited colleges and those with pending accreditation and share with the Ministry of Education to deal with the issues of non-compliance, unapproved colleges and fake certificates.
4. Identify solutions through a CBC Transition engagement to address the anticipated challenges that will occur due to the double intake of Form 1 and Junior Secondary students in January 2023. The proceedings from this meeting will be shared with the CS Education.
5. Promote career guidance to tackle “wastage” of students after high school who do not progress to either colleges or universities.

The Education sector is key in human capital development and efforts should be put in place not to isolate education from the general economic and social discourse in the light of building back a transformative society.
