On 9th February 2022, KEPSA CEO Ms Carole Kariuki held a meeting with Mr Ruskin Onyambu, Project Manager, Mr Pawel Bilski and Mr Keith Sharkie of Fortescue Future Industries (FFI). The team shared a progress update and the next steps for FFI in Kenya.
FFI is a global green company committed to producing zero-emission green hydrogen from 100% renewable energy sources. It is developing a global portfolio of renewable geothermal, hydropower, wind and solar assets. FFI’s vision is to make renewable green hydrogen the most globally traded seaborne energy commodity in the world.
KEPSA signed an MoU with FFI in November 2021 to facilitate private sector exploration of new large-scale green energy projects in Kenya.
In Kenya, FFI intends to invest in vertically integrated facilities for the production of green hydrogen. This will include exploration for renewable energy sources, transmission to market, production via electrolysis and shipping to market. The firm will partner with established public institutions and KEPSA members in the development of these projects. Some of the identified areas of partnership will be in transport and logistics (rail transport, storage, trucking and shipping), energy (energy exploration, generation and transmission). Other sectors will include; the agriculture sector, manufacturing, healthcare, water and environment, professionals and SMEs.
Over the next 8 years, FFI will develop various green energy projects in various parts of Kenya with their flagship project being at a Special Economic Zone (SEZ). The project will engage various professionals and artisans from Kenya with the first phase of the project estimated to engage about 1 million man-hours of labour. Some of these include; Civil equipment operators, Surveyors, LV electricians, MV/HV electricians, Instrument technicians, Masons, Instrument tube fitters, Steel fixers, Formwork carpenters, Structural steel erectors, Pipefitters & welders, helpers, riggers & dogmen, chargehands, foremen, Supervisors, Field engineers all disciplines, Field ES&H advisors, Welders, Crane operators, Construction equipment operators and Mechanical fitters.
