On 10th December 2024, KEPSA commemorated its 20th anniversary which marks two decades of achievements that have significantly impacted Kenya’s private sector and economic landscape since its establishment in 2003. The event, which was held at the KICC, Nairobi provided an opportunity for the KEPSA stakeholders to reflect upon the organisation’s journey, highlight key successes and outline future aspirations to strengthen the country’s economic sustainability and global competitiveness. The event was graced by H.E. Dr William Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya among other leaders.
The event included a full-day marketplace and exhibitions, where KEPSA members showcased and sold their goods and services at discounted rates, allowing Kenyans to experience and celebrate the diverse offerings of businesses in the country.
Speaking during the celebration, President Ruto acknowledged the important role KEPSA has played noting that over the past two decades, Kenya’s economy has experienced extraordinary growth and transformation, averaging a consistent GDP growth rate of 5.6% pre-COVID-19 and rebounding to 5.6% growth in 2023. This impressive and resilient performance, he said, demonstrates the robustness of Kenya’s economy, driven by a dynamic and vibrant private sector that continues to serve as the cornerstone of economic development.
“Our collaboration has already yielded significant outcomes, including the introduction of incentives for manufacturing, e-mobility, and special economic zones. These measures, alongside streamlined tax refund mechanisms, have boosted investor confidence and competitiveness,” Remarked President Ruto.
Dr Jas Bedi, KEPSA Chairperson, outlined the KEPSA milestones while pointing out that effective Public-Private Dialogue has been a cornerstone of the KEPSA journey, enabling a coordinated private sector approach to addressing critical economic and social issues. He also said that better policies, informed by shared learning, will ensure the growth and development of the private sector in Kenya.
“This 20th anniversary is not just a time to reflect on our past successes but a stepping stone to even greater heights. Our journey has been defined by resilience, innovation, and collective effort. Together, we will continue to adapt, grow, and achieve even greater success in the years to come.” Said Dr Bedi.
Other leaders who spoke during the event included Hon. Salim Mvurya, Cabinet Secretary for Investments, Trade and Industry; H.E Sakaja Johnson, Governor of Nairobi and H.E. Prof. Peter Anyang' Nyong'o, Governor of Kisumu. The celebration convened KEPSA leaders, trustees led by the founding Chairperson Dr. Manu Chandaria, members and partners.
In a fire chat session with the President that was moderated by Ms Carole Kariuki, KEPSA CEO, President Ruto said that the government is implementing various initiatives to ease business operations. These included the introduction of the Business Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024; prioritizing local manufacturers in procurement and addressing fiscal challenges by reducing inflation, stabilizing exchange rates, and reassessing public expenditure to focus on necessities like education. In the tech sector, he said that Kenya is fostering innovation through the Kenya Innovation Agency and the upcoming Start-Up Bill, aimed at supporting creatives and start-ups in the digital economy while encouraging tax contributions.
During the session, President Ruto agreed to have quarterly Presidential Roundtables with KEPSA that will bring together all stakeholders including the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI). He also agreed to have the first engagement with KEPSA's manufacturing sector in January 2025 to enhance local production.
The event concluded with a celebratory cake-cutting ceremony, followed by a networking cocktail where the KEPSA family and invited guests commemorated KEPSA's 20-year milestones and celebrated its achievements in 2024 as the year came to a close.
