KEPSA, through its social arm, KEPSA Foundation, donated food items to more than 600 families adversely affected by the floods on 3rd May 2024 in Githurai Sub-County, Kiambu County. Some of the displaced families are currently hosted at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Githurai.
While encouraging the flood victims during the distribution, KEPSA Foundation Executive Director Ms. Gloria Ndekei highlighted the dire need on the ground. She emphasized that the food and non-food donations would give the families relief during a period when they have lost their livelihoods, but more needs to be done to help them rebuild their lives in the community.
Representing the Cabinet Secretary for Investments, Trade, and Industry, Hon. Rebecca Miano, the Deputy Director for Trade, Mr. Linus Ogola, called upon the affected community members to avoid risky areas and work with the disaster management teams on the ground to ensure their safety.
A report by the Ministry of Interior and National Administration indicates that as of May 3rd, 2024, the fatalities from the floods had reached 210, while about 125 people had been reported injured. Displaced households now stand at 33,100 and approximately 196,296 people have been impacted by the heavy rains. The government has also set up 115 camps across 19 Counties, hosting 27,586 people. With a total of 1,967 schools reported to have been affected by the floods, the government also further extended the reopening of schools for the second term until further notice, urging parents and heads of institutions to prioritize the safety of children and teachers. Destruction of businesses and industries, water sources, and major roads has also been reported.
Ngara-two Sub Location Chief Mr. Patrick Ngaruiya expressed profound gratitude for the donation and recognized its significant role in helping the families rebuild their lives.
For her part, Sister Lilian Gatei Njuguna of St. Augustine Catholic Church appreciated the private sector's act of love and kindness extended to the needy community. She appreciated the spirit of togetherness that has been demonstrated during this devastating period and called for continued support to reach more affected people and alleviate further suffering in the community.
Today’s donation was made possible through a collaboration with the Chandaria Foundation, Mama Doing Good, and Global Peace Foundation, demonstrating the strength of partnership and unity in times of crisis.
