My name is Ruth Karuiru, and I’m the proud owner of Small World Kenya Shop, located in Njabini town, near Sasumua Dam in Nyandarua. I started my business in 2019 after doing a course in sales and marketing—something I’ve always been passionate about. At my shop, as a retail trader, I sell a variety of cereals and basic household items such as sugar, flour, etc. This mix of products has allowed me to serve my community’s everyday needs and give back to the community through the knowledge I have.
Running this business hasn’t been without challenges. One of the biggest hurdles I have faced is limited funding, and I haven’t been able to venture into digital selling and marketing to enable me to reach customers beyond Njabini. I have employed two young people, and together, we work hard to make sure the business runs smoothly and that we meet our customers’ needs.
Groot's Kenya have also supported me in this journey, encouraging me to push forward. We have a Groot's Kenya champion here in Njabini, who has been able to share their amazing work to support small businesses, which has inspired me. I started attending their training sessions and those offered by KNCCI, and through these platforms, I got connected to KEPSA.
The training I’ve received from KEPSA has truly been a game-changer. It taught me how to separate my finances, manage cash flow, control losses and assess the health of my business. I’ve also learned how to use social media platforms such as WhatsApp groups to advertise my products, which is something I hadn’t considered before. Record-keeping and creating a business plan will become a central part of how I run my shop going forward.
My greatest lesson is that I’m no longer working in isolation since through the training, I learnt the power of networking. Consequently, I was able to connect with other business owners, and I’ve found new opportunities and linkages that are helping me think bigger. Even though I’m still based in Njabini, my vision for Small World Kenya Shop is growing, and I’m excited to take my business to new heights.
