My name is Priscillah Ade. At 32 years old, my background in environmental management—encouraged by my work with the Ministry of Agriculture on the Kenya Climate Smart Agricultural Program (KCSAP)—opened my eyes to reality: a report by Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO), revealed that 60% of Kenya’s land is degraded, leading to declining crop yields and food insecurity. This insight ignited my determination to develop a solution that could rejuvenate the soil and improve agricultural productivity.
Alongside me is my co-founder, Caroline Ade, who at 26 years old brings fresh, innovative perspectives to our mission. Witnessing the increasing challenges posed by climate fluctuations, Caroline envisioned Canit Organics as a means to mitigate climate change by producing biochar that sequesters carbon from the atmosphere. Together, we embarked on this journey to convert poultry waste into a sustainable organic fertilizer through a pyrolysis process that enriches soil health and also contributes to environmental conservation.
Despite being rooted in Kisumu, Nyakach, we traveled to Nairobi to attend the Jiinue Growth Program—a training opportunity we missed in our local region—to become investor ready and sharpen our business acumen. One invaluable lesson we learned was the importance of separating personal finances from business accounts, ensuring that our individual liabilities do not hinder our company’s growth. The program also taught us that success is built on patience, grit, and the commitment to continuous improvement; it doesn’t happen overnight.
Today, our team of five dedicated employees and three part-time casuals work tirelessly to produce biochar that promises to transform Kenya’s agricultural landscape. With orders beginning to roll in, we are now seeking funding to expand our production capacity and extend our reach to more farmers, helping to restore degraded lands and boost food security.
The Jiinue Growth Program is a catalyst in our journey, equipping us with the tools and confidence to grow our business. We remain committed to healing the land and creating lasting positive change for our environment.
