KEPSA, represented by Eng. Patrick Obath, participated in the 5th Edition of the Africa Resilience Forum, which kicked off on 3rd October 2023 in Abidjan, Cote D'Ivoire. The forum was organised by the African Development Bank (AfDB) under the theme ‘Financing Peace, Security and Development for a Prosperous and Resilient Africa’. The event brought together different organizations around the continent working on peacebuilding, security and development including the private sector.
In a panel session on Investing in Youth for Peace and Development, the KEPSA Foundation Chair Eng. Patrick Obath expounded KEPSA's work in coordinating the private sector to deliver on various initiatives at the nexus of youth, peace, security and development such as Mkenya Daima, youth employment and entrepreneurship programs, climate change among others. "It is essential to give young men and women access to opportunities, particularly in fragile contexts and the private sector is a critical actor in the ecosystem," he commended during the forum.
The private sector and engagement of young people is an emerging strategy for addressing peace and security. Eng Obath said the private sector in Kenya is intentional in engaging youth looking as an asset in terms of the market of their goods and services and source of talent for sustainability.
Eng. Obath was with H.E. Kenyeh Barlay, Minister of Planning and Economic Development, Republic of Sierra Leone; Abdourahmane Diop, CEO, Haskè Ventures; Genevieve Boutin, Deputy Director, UNICEF Program Group; and Sarra Messaoudi, Regional Coordinator, MENA Coalition on Youth Peace and Security in a session that was moderated by Ahmed Rashad Attout, Acting Director, Financial Sector Development Department, AfDB.
KEPSA will roll out a Peacebuilding initiative embedded in its current youth empowerment work. In this project, Radical Flexibility Fund, KEPSA and Investing and Partnering with Youth for Peace (IPYP) will collaborate within the Kenyan context to apply the 'How to Be Radical' guide in order to establish a community-led innovative resourcing mechanism to address the needs of young peacebuilders and young people’s peacebuilding needs.
