On 26th January 2022, Sustainable Inclusive Business (SIB – Kenya), a knowledge centre under KEPSA in collaboration with its partner TNO research, held a stakeholder workshop on circularity analysis of plastic household waste in Lusaka, Zambia. The team is providing necessary support to the Zambian government keen on enhancing waste management by leveraging technologies within the waste value chain.
The team also paid a courtesy call to Lusaka City Council to deliberate on the status of waste management in Lusaka City. A visit to Chunga landfill revealed that approximately 2000 tons of waste is disposed at the landfill every week.
SIB-Kenya Project Manager Mr. Ebenezer Amadi together with SIB-Kenya Knowledge Management Specialist Mr. Raymond Obare were among the delegates at the workshop. The team observed the separation of waste at source as one of the avenues to increase recovery material as input for production.
The team is set to release a comprehensive report on the study on the current status of the circular economy in the waste sector for developing a waste stream-specific roadmap in Zambia, once completed as they exchange knowledge and expertise on working circular models across different African countries.
