KEPSA, through the support of Trademark East Africa (TMEA) and in partnership with the Ministry of East African Community and Regional Development, engaged stakeholders in a collaborative effort to review the East African Community Customs Management Act (EACCMA) 2004 and the East African Community Customs Management Regulations (EACCMR) 2010.
The two-day stakeholders’ workshop that started on 8th February 2022 at PrideInn Hotel in Shanzu, brought on board critical private sector players and government agencies involved in cross-border trade to discuss the proposals that would inform the country’s position in the review process.
In his remarks, Mr Patrick Maingi – KEPSA Public-Private Dialogue (PPD) Specialist and Projects Coordinator noted that the review of the existing legislation was long overdue to ensure that the East African Community Customs Management Act takes cognizance of the changes in the customs and business practises.
Representing the Principal Secretary State Department of East African Community, Mr Charles Ngunjiri – Director of Productive and Services noted that the ministry took cognizance of the teething problems which needed to be addressed through the Act and Regulations to fully implement the Common market protocol and widen the EAC integration. He further appreciated the tremendous changes in the operations of businesses and customs.
The workshop aimed at coming up with a solid memorandum that would be validated and presented to the government as the Private Sector’s position for further escalation to the EAC Council of Ministers.
