In a significant stride towards sustainable development, the Inter-Agency Technical Committee (IATC) convened in a four-day forum that kicked off on 25th March 2024 in Naivasha under the invite of the State Department for Economic Planning. This gathering, comprising representatives from government agencies, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), the private sector, Parliament, media, academia, and development partners like United Nations Agencies and the European Commission (PARiS 21), marked a crucial milestone in Kenya's journey towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
One notable highlight of the meeting was the culmination of efforts to finalize the National Voluntary Review (VNR), incorporating insights gleaned from Voluntary Local Reviews (VLRs) collected from various counties. Among the diverse stakeholders present, the private sector, represented by Dr. Jackson Koimbori of the Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA), played a pivotal role in shaping the discourse on SDG implementation and charting a path forward.
Dr. Koimbori provided a comprehensive update on the progress made by the private sector in aligning with the SDGs and outlined strategic initiatives to address existing challenges. Key among the recommendations put forth were the establishment of a centralized data collection mechanism and increased investment in the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics for regular data collection and verification activities. These recommendations underscored the imperative of robust data infrastructure in driving evidence-based decision-making and monitoring progress towards SDG targets.
Despite facing formidable challenges in the development of the 2024 VNR and VLR, Kenya has made significant strides in advancing the SDG agenda. Notably, the number of SDG indicators has increased from 148 to 162, reflecting a more comprehensive approach to measuring progress. Furthermore, the number of counties reporting on their VLRs has surged from 5 to over 13, underscoring a growing commitment at the grassroots level to embrace sustainable development principles.
Looking ahead, KEPSA, as the apex body representing the private sector, is poised to play a pivotal role in translating commitments into action. The organization is committed to spearheading collaborative initiatives with donors and other stakeholders to implement projects that address the priorities outlined in the VNR and VLR. By harnessing the collective expertise and resources of its members, KEPSA aims to drive tangible progress towards achieving the SDGs and fostering a sustainable future for all Kenyans.
In conclusion, the recent IATC meeting serves as a testament to the collective resolve of Kenya's diverse stakeholders to accelerate progress towards the SDGs. With the private sector assuming a proactive role in the journey towards sustainability, there is renewed optimism that through concerted efforts and partnerships, Kenya can realize its vision of a prosperous, inclusive and environmentally sustainable society.
