KEPSA, on July 17, 2023, participated in the launch of the Africa Climate Summit Registration Website >> www.africaclimatesummit.org, which also hosts the registration Portal for the delegates and speakers at the summit. In her key note address, while launching the link, the Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry highlighted that, “it is the first time in the history of climate change that our continent, Africa for that matter, is coming together to engage on climate change and development nexus as a unified Africa position to 28th Session of the United Nations Convention on Climate Change Framework, Conference of Parties (COP 28).” Africa provides the world with immense resources that include the vast untapped arable agricultural land, critical minerals, renewable energy potential as well as carbon sinks. Africa has stepped up to take its place in identifying her competitive advantage in terms of solutions and ideas, and the resources projected to be met by the capital and technology required. With the launch of the Africa Climate Summit online presence, the summit is now real more than ever before.”
Hon. Ali Mohammed, the Climate Change Envoy Office of the President, appreciated the role of the private sector and corporate institutions in supporting the support through submission of innovative solutions including planting of trees, circular economy for waste management, electric buses among others for decarbonization of Africa. He added that, citizens and communities have not been left behind and they are all supporting the global and national climate action agenda.
Among the key principles of the Summit, as expounded by the Africa Climate Summit CEO Mr Joseph Nganga, is that Climate action and economic development are not in conflict but interdependent; they need to happen together or neither will happen. There is need to ensure that capital is optimized and spent on a global basis with carbon reduction as a return parameter rather than locally optimized
H.E President Dr. William Ruto as the Chair of the African Heads of State and Governments (CAHOSC), his message conveyed virtually during the launch, indicated that the summit will provide an opportunity to define and refine Africa’s distinctive position to engage effectively in saving the planet from the climate catastrophe. Kenya is committed to bringing everyone on board to in order to make their voice heard as climate change does not discriminate. Effective climate action must recognize our shared threat, as well as collective opportunity to develop and implement common global solutions. Africa is ushering in a new era of international solidarity and multilateral governance to guide the world in climate action and a new green industrial age. KEPSA is partnering with the Africa climate summit secretariat to coordinating the private sector participation at the summit.
