On 19th – 20th January 2022, KEPSA participated in the Intergovernmental Forum for Agriculture (IGFA) held in Mombasa to deliberate on policy matters and appraise the sector’s performance. Themed ‘Strengthening intergovernmental relations and partnerships for Sustainable Food Systems Towards 100 Percent Food and Nutrition Security in Kenya’, the forum reviewed the resolutions of the third IGFA and the progress made in implementing the Agriculture Sector Transformation and Growth Strategy.
KEPSA, represented by Mrs. Agatha Thuo, General Manager of the Agriculture Sector Network (ASNET) called on the IGFA to commit to increasing agricultural investments by ‘A Factor of Four’, ahead of the next IGFA.
To unlock private sector investments, KEPSA tabled eight requests urging for prioritized implementation of high-impact and low-cost interventions in the quadrant of issues facing the sector. These include;
The IGFA, convened by Hon. Peter Munya, the Cabinet secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Cooperatives, is co-chaired by the Council of Governors chairman, Mr. Martin Wambora. It brings together County bosses, CECs in charge of Agriculture, top ministry officials, representatives of sectoral ministries, state agencies, key private sector players and development partners with a mandate to give policy direction on agricultural sector governance issues affecting the two levels of government and to allow for wider stakeholder participation.
The Joint Agriculture Sector Consultation and Cooperation mechanism was established during the second forum in Mombasa six years ago and is the highest level of consultation and cooperation between the national government and counties as well as other stakeholders.
