PRIVATE SECTOR PLAYERS LAUNCH ‘PAMOJA TUUNGANE INITIATIVE’ TO MITIGATE DROUGHT IMPACT

On 31st October 2022, KEPSA, in partnership with other private sector players and development partners, launched a call to action for the Pamoja Tuungane Initiative to support the government in addressing the adverse impact of the drought. The event, which was held at the Villa Rosa Kempinski Hotel, was presided over by H.E Rigathi Gachagua – Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya.
Present during the event was H.E Rigathi Gachagua; Hon. Rebecca Miano – Cabinet Secretary for East African Community, Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs) and Regional Development; Hon. Ababu Namwamba - Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Sports and the Arts; Ms Carole Kariuki – CEO, KEPSA; Ms Flora Mutahi – Chairperson, KEPSA; Mr Jas Bedi – Vice-Chair, KEPSA; Mr Peter Ndegwa – CEO, Safaricom; Ms Azeb Asrat - Rotary District Governor; Mr Anthony Ngororano - United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Resident Representative; Dr Stephen Jackson – United Nations Resident Coordinator among others.
The Pamoja Tuungane Initiative has a focus on four thematic areas: Food, Health, WASH, and Cash Transfers. KEPSA and its partners aim to inspire businesses, corporates, development partners, and Kenyans to unite and support their fellow countrymen hard hit by famine.
The initiative will look to mid-term to long-term solutions to this perennial drought that takes place every 4 to 5 years and is getting worse with the effects of climate change. The short-term intervention intends to mobilise resources to save lives. While the mid-term intervention will concentrate on policy reforms and investment as a long-term solution.
