KEPSA a co-chair of the Kenya National Platform on Partnering for Green Growth and Global Goals (P4G), participated in the Global National Platforms Gathering ahead of the 3rd P4G Summit on 21st September 2023 in Bogota, Colombia. Kenya was represented by the national focal points including Ms Faith Ngige, the KEPSA Focal Point, Mr Augustine Kenduiwo, the Government of Kenya Focal Point and Mr Peter Odhengo, representing the National Treasury and Economic Planning, who Chairs the Kenya National P4G Platform
The gathering drew representatives from the organizations that comprise the national platforms of P4G partner countries, focal points of the organizations that co-chair the national platforms for P4G, selected members of the Global Advisory Council and Steering Committee of P4G and the P4G hub staff and consultants. The key objective of the pre-summit national platforms meeting was to share learnings and best practices across the national platforms on the approach and activities that contribute to improving the green growth enabling systems in the respective countries as well as provide focus and the vision for phase 2 of P4G.
P4G builds a pipeline of bankable, locally-led green businesses that can attract global climate finance to low- and middle-income countries, to reduce emissions, enhance resilience, create jobs and contribute to poverty reduction. The National Platforms help inform and support key enabling regulatory shifts needed for greater climate resilience.
In a panel session on positioning climate finance for the private sector growth in P4G countries, the panelists shared how different countries are working to mobilize climate finance to support green entrepreneurs. Mr Peter Odhengo, who is also the Head of the Climate Finance Unit, National Treasury and Planning shared the progress Kenya has made especially in accessing the Green Climate Fund for the NAP Readiness support project. This project saw KEPSA implement Component Four which established the Climate Business Information Network – Kenya (CBIN-K) in order to coordinate private sector involvement and investment in climate solutions.
Kenya has also established a pool fund to accelerate access to climate finance that draws funds from grants, donations, concessional loans and other sources including private financing, known as Financing Locally Led Climate Action (FLLoCA). This is an innovative model to enhance last-mile access to climate finance that has seen counties develop county climate change financing laws, create ward-level committees and support communities in developing their own priority climate actions financed by the fund.
Later in the day, the focal points also shared their 2023 results and priorities for 2024 to originate and support P4G partnerships and improve enabling systems for green growth. Kenya presentation was made by Ms Faith Ngige and Mr Augustine Kenduiwo, the Focal Points of the Kenya National P4G platform. Since the year began the platform has made significant progress in holding workshops for e-mobility and water sectors. The Kenya National platform also organized side events on the implementation of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), the launch of the second phase of P4G in Kenya during the Africa Climate Summit that took place on 4th - 6th September 2023 in Nairobi. The summit saw heads of states, government and stakeholders including the private sector commit to driving green growth and climate finance solutions for Africa and the world.
From the Nairobi Declaration, there is explicit commitment to propel Kenya’s economic growth and job creation in a manner that reflects the country’s commitment to the Paris Agreement and also aids global decarbonization efforts, by leapfrogging the traditional progression of industrial development and fostering green production and supply chains on a global scale. The Kenya National platform will thus support the implementation of the Nairobi Declaration as well as work to foster alignment with the hub accelerating green market-based solutions.
Other platforms that shared their results and priorities included Indonesia, Vietnam, the Republic of Korea, Colombia, Netherlands, South Africa, Ethiopia and Denmark. In her closing remarks of the day, the Executive Director of P4G, Ms Robyn McGuckin, applauded the national platforms for making such great progress in promoting the P4G approach to accelerate P4G partnerships. The first summit was held in 2018 in Denmark and the second in South Korea in 2020. The 3rd P4G summit is designed as an ‘implementation summit’ and begins on 22nd and 23rd September 2023.
