Today, July 24, 2024, marked a significant milestone as the Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) and the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate on the development and implementation of a plastic recycling curriculum. The signing ceremony, held at KEPSA offices, was attended by notable representatives from both organizations. KEPSA was represented by Mr. Victor Ogalo, Deputy CEO, Dr. Jackson Koimbori, Senior Circular Economy and Climate Change Coordinator, and Ms. Priscilla Kerebi, Vice-Chair of the Educational Sector Board. From NITA, Ms. Theresa Wasike, Ag. Director General, Ms. Jane W. Kamau, Director Industrial Training & Skills Development, Ms. Caroline Musango, Manager, Legal Services, and Ms. Phyllis Kiplagat, Ag. Manager Research and Curriculum Development Department were present.
The MOU between KEPSA and NITA underscores a shared commitment to promoting sustainable waste management practices through education and training. This collaboration aims to develop a comprehensive curriculum that addresses the urgent issue of plastic pollution in Kenya. By integrating topics related to plastic pollution, environmental conservation, and sustainable waste management, the curriculum will equip individuals and institutions with the knowledge and skills necessary to combat plastic waste effectively.
During the signing ceremony, Mr. Victor Ogalo highlighted the importance of this partnership in driving Kenya towards a circular economy. He emphasized that KEPSA's involvement would ensure that the curriculum not only meets industry standards but also addresses the practical needs of plastic recycling practitioners. Dr. Jackson Koimbori added that this initiative aligns perfectly with KEPSA's goals of fostering environmental sustainability and climate change resilience within the private sector.
Ms. Theresa Wasike, speaking on behalf of NITA, expressed her enthusiasm for the partnership, noting that NITA's expertise in industrial training and curriculum development will be crucial in creating a robust and impactful educational program. She underscored the significance of training and certifying individuals to ensure high standards in plastic recycling practices across the country. The collaboration is expected to pilot the curriculum in select institutions, gathering feedback to refine and optimize its effectiveness.
The MOU signing concluded with a mutual commitment to furthering this initiative and exploring additional areas of collaboration.
