KEPSA in Partnership with NEMA and WEEE Centre hosted a webinar on 19th March 2024 that aimed to provide clarity on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and Producer Responsibility Organizations (PROs) in sustainable waste management, with a particular focus on electronics. The webinar highlighted the importance of EPR in ensuring producers take responsibility for managing their products at the end of their life cycle, the economic benefits of EPR and the role of PROs in its implementation.
Dr. Ayub Macharia, from NEMA, provided an in-depth overview of the implementation of the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) law in Kenya. He highlighted the key obligations for producers to reduce pollution and environmental impacts of their products, explaining the waste flow process and the specific requirements for producers to demonstrate compliance with the law. Additionally, he emphasized the significance of incentivizing waste pickers and providing detailed, county-specific plans for waste management, including transportation and disposal.
Catherine Masolia, representing WEEE Center, emphasized their compliance with environmental management guidelines, NEMA licensing, and their commitment to creating a green and safe environment using circular economy principles. Masolia detailed WEEE Centre’s services, including waste segregation, valuable resource recovery, material recovery, waste management plan development, and comprehensive data collection for annual reporting. She also highlighted the availability of collection points and drop-off locations across Kenya, as well as their own facility for recycling electronic waste.
Participants emphasized the need for regulatory clarity and enhanced collaboration to streamline waste management processes and achieve sustainability objectives.
The webinar served as an informative platform for participants to gain a deeper understanding of sustainable waste management practices, empowering them to integrate EPR principles into their business strategies.
