For many young people, especially young women, securing decent work to earn a dignified livelihood can be a challenging task. For Purity, it was not any different like most young people after school who was not spared during an organizational restructuring following her minimal experience then. She is a Finance and Accounting Management graduate and was for sometime lucky to work in the microfinance sector where she served as a loan officer. In this role, she was responsible for assessing client creditworthiness, managing loan portfolios, and supporting financial inclusion efforts.
However, that did not last long and was left without work and no source of income. Purity was deeply frustrated and disheartened due to the lack of job opportunities. As the breadwinner in her family, the pressure of having no income and no clear direction left her feeling depressed and hopeless.
In her search for work, she learned about the Ajira Digital Program through a Google Ads campaign. She applied for the available opportunities and managed to be placed in an internship which has continued to provide her with valuable hands-on experience and professional growth. Her key highlight from the internship was the mentorship and guidance she received through the Program, where a representative from Ajira regularly followed up to ensure she was progressing well during her internship.
“This consistent support kept me motivated and aligned with my goals. As a result of the skills I developed and the experience I gained, I was fortunate to secure a full-time job at the same company where I had been placed for my internship. I am now a Customer Care Representative with a digitized waste management company. The Ajira Digital Program has had a significant and transformative impact on my life. This has not only restored my confidence but has also enabled me to support my family financially. With what I earn, I am also able to share and make a difference at home. The opportunity also inspired my younger brother, who is in the health sector and is considering taking digital skills courses. The program has been a true eye-opener, giving me the flexibility to work remotely and the motivation to continue advancing my digital skills through accredited institutions. Today, I am excited about the future because of the chance I got through the Program and a chance for me to shape my career” said Purity.
“One thing I have learnt as a Finance professional and also now that I upskilled in Cybersecurity and Frameworks, it’s important to remain disciplined and committed; working online doesn’t mean unlimited freedom—it still requires you to meet your performance targets and deliver results. Regardless of the course or background you come from, digital skills can blend with any field and open up new career paths. Be flexible, open-minded, and willing to learn. To anyone interested, I would strongly encourage you to consider joining the Ajira Digital Program. The future of work is online, and this program equips you with the tools to thrive in that space. One of the greatest benefits is the flexibility, being able to work from anywhere, including from home, which greatly enhances productivity and efficiency.” she added.
This isn’t just the story of purity but of many young people across the country seeking a dignified and fulfilling livelihood. Thank you to KEPSA members and partners that have opened their doors for internship opportunities or full-time jobs to these talented young people.
We are still open for the She Diverse360 Cohort 2 of the program to all organizations interested in hosting highly trained and digitally skilled young women. Kindly sign up here
