KEPSA CEO Ms Carole Kariuki joined other key stakeholders in the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) 20th anniversary celebrations on 24th May 2023 at the institution’s headquarters in Nairobi. APHRC is a premier research-to-policy institution, generating evidence, strengthening research and related capacity in the African research and development ecosystem, and engaging policy to inform action on health and development. The anniversary celebrations reflected APHRC’s journey, growth and future.
Speaking during the event, APHRC Executive Director Dr Catherine Kyobutungi noted that research products alone by design cannot change the world but only when applied as part of an evidence-based policy or program intervention. She also said that despite Africa being a significant source of research, its global contribution is still low. This, she said, is attributed to the low investment in research, which results in Africa's limited representation in the global knowledge economy. She however noted that this presents an opportunity for Africa to make a significant leap in its social and economic development.
In a high-level panel discussion themed ‘African solution to health and development challenges: Mainstreaming African-led research for national, regional, and global policy influence’, the KEPSA CEO noted that there’s a huge convergence between the private sector and research, adding that the business community heavily depend on research to make informed decisions. Ms Kariuki went on to say that the private sector does not only consume market research to sell products and services, which speaks to the economic impact but also partners with the government to provide social and environmental solutions for sustainable development.
Ms Kariuki was joined by Prof Alex Ezeh - Dornsife School of Public Health; Dr Fiona Wanjiku Moejes - CEO, The Mawazo Institute; Prof Tom Kariuki - Executive Director, Science for Africa Foundation (SFA) and the host, Dr Kyobutungi in a panel that was moderated by KTN TV anchor Mr Noah Kipkemboi.
As part of its anniversary activities, the APHRC also hosted the 'Evidence to Policy Impact Symposium' that addressed challenges hindering effective public policy engagement, decision-making, and interventions to tackle health development challenges in African countries.
APHRC has for the last twenty years run numerous research projects and generated evidence that has shaped policy and practice across Africa. In Kenya, it has contributed to landmark reports such as the 2013 Publication on the Incidence and Complications of Unsafe Abortion in Kenya, the 2015 National STEPs Survey on Non-Communicable Diseases, the 2022 Kenya – National Adolescent Mental Health Survey, Nairobi City's first comprehensive Shit Flow Diagram (SFD) in 2017, which helps visualize and understand how faecal waste flows through the city's infrastructure, among others.
