On 15th September 2023, KEPSA represented by Ms Faith Ngige, Focal point of The Kenya Denmark Strategic Sector Co-operation (SSC) on Environment and Circular Economy at KEPSA, engaged with Ms Kamilla Heden, The Circular Economy and Environment Counsellor - Royal Danish Embassy, and Ms Janne Winther, representing the Danish Mission under the Danish Environmental Protection Agency (DEPA).
The meeting took place at the Danish Embassy Offices in Nairobi and focused on exploring possibilities of a new Partnership and targeted collaboration with KEPSA under the SSC. The meeting discussed opportunities for supporting producers to implement Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) as provided for under the Sustainable Waste Management Act 2022. All producers who introduce products into the Kenya market bear mandatory extended Producer Responsibility for the full lifecycle of their products including the waste arising therefrom.
Under the partnership, KEPSA will undertake public-private policy dialogues on EPR implementation, and create awareness and capacity-building programs for producers to enhance their compliance. The National Environment Management Authority has issued a 60-day window period for putting in place compliance measures by all producers in Kenya.
