On 11th July 2023, KEPSA CEO Ms Carole Kariuki held a meeting with Dr. Stephen Mwachofi Singo, a United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Senior Consultant on Peace Building Architectural Review at KEPSA offices. The meeting aimed at setting the framework of engagement by the private sector in the Peace Building Architecture (PBA) review. Dr. Mwachofi was accompanied by the International Consultant Dr. Dirk Duert from Canada.
In his remarks, Dr. Mwachofi noted that PBA is a government process supported by the UN to review laws, and policies as undertaken by institutions. The main aim of the process is to improve the peace-building process, review past progress and lessons as well as look into new challenges, for example, elections, cattle rustling, climate change, violent extremism, technological advancements and digital space such as social media, and how to manage these emerging challenges in light of peace building.
He noted that this initiative was started in March, 2023, hoping to take a qualitative perspective through quantitative analysis. Fieldwork has already begun and taken place in 33 counties around Kenya and the raw data has been presented. A team comprising of Independent Panel Analysts, a technical working group and a Secretariat has also been formed to carry out the review. At the Global level, the UN Secretary General is set to release a new peace agenda that will focus on the peace structure currently in place at national and international level, the peace systems, both formally and informally.
He further noted that a defined process has been identified to conduct the Peace Building review. It includes:
Dr. Duert noted the importance of involvement of the private sector in the PBA Review and that this would provide an opportunity to bring ideas. He positioned Kenya to explore this opportunity and take lead on the same.
Ms. Carole Kariuki appreciated the initiative and was tasked with participating fully in the IPA process especially in meetings as private sector representative; convening key stakeholders in the private sector on how peace building could rely on Sustainable Financing; and actualizing overall output of IPA.
It was agreed that the data collected throughout the reviewing process will help in developing a report, a recommendation an implementation strategy then presented to the President hoping to result in advocacy to enlighten people on the importance of peace. Both KEPSA and UNDP agreed to work together to advance the agenda of the peace building initiative.
