Partnering for Green Growth and Global Goals (P4G)- a global platform that nurtures and accelerates market-based solutions for climate and green growth held a Kenya national workshop on the second phase of P4G on 11th August 2023 to create awareness on requirements toward the call for proposals for innovative market-based green investment ideas.
In his remarks, the Kenya National Platform Focal Point under the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, Mr Augustine Kenduiwo, shared with participants the journey to the establishment of the P4G Platform in Kenya, which was done through consultative meetings of partners. The National Treasury and Planning, Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, The Royal Danish Embassy, KEPSA and Vision 2030 held a consultative seminar on 14th February 2018 that led to the establishment of a multi-stakeholder Kenyan P4G National Platform in July 2018.
The Kenya National Platform is Chaired by the National Treasury and Economic Planning and the Kenya Private Sector Alliance, with technical support from the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, Vision 2030, the Royal Danish Embassy and the P4G hub. Together, these leading organizations host the Kenyan P4G National Platform. Ms. Faith Ngige, The Private Sector Focal Point of the Kenya P4G national platform shared the contribution of the platform to the green transition in Kenya. Especially the translation of the green agenda under the Green Economy and Implementation Strategy (GESIP) to the marketplace. P4G has catalyzed market-based solutions to a green economy by fostering public-private partnerships thereby supporting and addressing systemic challenges inherent in green transitions.
The major contributions of the platform in Kenya have been providing leadership in the adoption of circular economy approach to waste management in Kenya, resulting to the development of the sustainable waste management Act 2022; adoption of mandatory Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and capacity building of trailblazers on green and circular economy under the Danish Government- DANIDA programs. The P4G has also supported the acceleration of e-mobility in Kenya, especially of the two-wheelers and three-wheelers in Kisumu County.
The Kenya National P4G platform liaison Mr Paul Mbole highlighted that the second phase of P4G 2023 – 2030 officially began in July 2023 and the second phase will focus on climate entrepreneurship. The second phase will focus on green and inclusive growth businesses in middle-income countries. The market-based ideas should relate to climate mitigation or adaptation solutions in the priority sectors. Businesses supported by P4G become investment-ready.
Ms Patricia Mijares, took members through the call for P4G and the requirements to be eligible for funding.
