KEPSA, represented by Ms Faith Ngige – Climate Business Information Network Kenya (CBIN-K) - Coordinator, took part in developing the inaugural Kenya National Green Growth Index (GGI). Kenya becomes the second country after Zambia to develop a national green growth index. The National Treasury and Economic Planning in partnership with the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) led the process of developing the GGI index that began in August 2023 and culminated in a scores validation and interpretation workshop that took place in Naivasha from 6th – 10th November 2023.
GGI measures a country's performance in achieving sustainability targets, including Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Paris Climate Agreement, and Aichi Biodiversity Targets and Social Inclusion parameters. GGI is a policy tool used to mainstream green growth indicators and performance measurement into government’s planning, processes and capacity-building and investment decisions. The four dimensions of the index are efficient and sustainable resource use (ESRU), natural capital protection (NCP), green economic opportunities (GEO) and social inclusion (SI).
Just like KEPSA led the Ease of Doing Business (EDB) Reforms in the country that led to improvement of administration process the registration of business and on virtualization of the doing business processes in Kenya, KEPSA through the Third National Business Agenda (NBAIII 2018- 2022) focused in driving green business environment reforms. This resulted in increased adoption of the sustainability and circular business models as espoused in the efficient and sustainable resource use of natural resources through extended producer responsibility and circular economy.
The team of national experts supported by GGGI finalized the assessment and preliminary results indicate that, In the 2022 Kenya Green Growth Index, Kenya has an overall Index score of 47.08, which is a moderate green growth performance. The inaugural Index provides baseline data to benchmark green growth performance and information for greening national development frameworks, by highlighting potential green interventions and supporting the green growth diagnosis and assessment process in the implementation of the GESIP 2016 – 2030.
Among the four green growth dimensions, Kenya excels in Natural capital protection with a score of 58.33. The lowest score is found in the GEO dimension where Kenya has a score of 26.7. The preliminary results will undergo national validation by the body responsible for national statistics and sustainable development before they are launched. They can be accessed here;
