On November 23rd 2023, the International Chamber of Commerce Kenya (ICC-Kenya) hosted a workshop focused on Sustainable Agriculture, convening diverse stakeholders to deliberate on key priorities for 2024. The workshop highlighted crucial areas of concentration, including the Carbon Farming Initiative, Soil Health Management, Agroecological Ecosystem Management, 4R Stewardship for Nutrient Management, and Green Financing Opportunities.
It was noted that there were key similarities among the organizations present in their initiatives on sustainable agriculture. Across different entities, there is a shared emphasis on addressing critical priorities in agriculture, such as the promotion of regenerative practices, soil health management, and carbon farming. Organizations like EABL, INNOVX, ENI, OCP Africa, Syngenta Foundation for Sustainable Agriculture (SFSA), IFC, the Cereals Growers Association, and the African Plant Nutrition Institute (APNI) are all dedicated to holistic and environmentally conscious agricultural practices.
Specifically, these entities prioritize farmer training and capacity building, emphasizing the importance of comprehensive programs to ensure sustainable impact. The integration of digitalization, financial partnerships, and certification processes throughout the agricultural value chain is another common trend, demonstrating a commitment to enhancing efficiency and sustainability. Additionally, various organizations focus on inclusive strategies, gender inclusivity, and community engagement through models like village-based advisors and Rural Agripreneur initiatives.
Furthermore, there is a shared commitment to addressing climate-smart components within training programs, promoting resilience in agricultural practices. The organizations recognize the importance of collaboration with stakeholders, including partnerships with financial institutions, government bodies, and other companies. Overall, these entities collectively strive to advance sustainable agriculture by incorporating a multifaceted approach that considers environmental impact, farmer well-being, and community development.
