On 21st January 2022, the KEPSA CEO Ms. Carole Kariuki joined key leaders of institutions in the corporate and non-profit sectors including Safaricom CEO Mr. Peter Ndegwa, KEPSA Advisor Mr. John Ngumi, KenGen Managing Director & CEO among others, in the CEOs’ Breakfast Forum at the Nairobi Serena Hotel, to discuss the critical role of leaders in a turbulent environment.
The forum, themed ‘Recalibrating Leadership in Disruptive Times’ also served as the official launch of The Catalead, a leadership consultancy for institutions and individuals, spearheaded by Dr. David Oginde.
In his keynote address, the Safaricom CEO outlined his career journey right from when he was a salesperson while noting that it is possible for someone to develop into a leader and not necessarily be born as a leader. Mr. Ndegwa said that leaders ought to be more confident by advancing their knowledge and focusing on their purpose. He also called on leaders to be architects of freedom in society by helping others to dream more, do more and reinvent their organizations.
In his remarks, Dr. Oginde noted that The Catalead is committed to catalyzing leadership and inspiring leaders to be highly productive. He added that the organization will provide courses to coaching and consultancy that will be offered in three different parts: The first is a series of sessions that helps one to establish leadership rules. The second part will help one to grow leadership muscle and the third one will grow leadership capital which includes self-actualization.
On a panel discussion with Dr. David Oginde, Mr. Peter Ndengwa and Victoria Rubadiri (moderator), Ms. Kariuki noted that she has learned a lot as a leader including being self-driven and the importance of being a dynamic leader in dealing with the constant changes.
While responding to a question on how the organization dealt with the Covid-19 pandemic, Ms. Kariuki highlighted the importance of being prepared for crises. She noted that KEPSA moved with speed to develop an economic framework that was eventually used by the government and led to measures that were taken to cushion Kenyans from the impact.
Ms. Kariuki also said that the research that was conducted by KEPSA greatly helped the organization to prioritize the critical areas to focus on including; partnering with the Mastercard Foundation to support MSMEs by offering interest-free loans and mentorship and coaching.
