On 13th May 2022, the Ajira Digital Program and the Judiciary team visited the Ajira Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) centre at Swahilipot Hub in Mombasa town where they had a chance to interact with the young digital workers who are the legal transcription agents. This BPO centre with 99% of the transcribers being young women from the Mombasa region expressed their gratitude for these digital work opportunities which have significantly contributed to their livelihoods.
Marrieta Muthoki, one of the agents at Swahilipot Hub, explained how her father lost his job during COVID pandemic and with her mother not working, she had to get an alternative to support her family. She learnt about Ajira Digital Program where she was trained in digital skills including data entry, transcription, digital marketing and virtual assistant. After a mentorship program with the Program, she managed to secure the transcription work at the BPO through Adept Technologies. Marietta was happy to report that through the digital work she is able to pay her younger sister’s secondary school fees as well as support herself and her family with some home bills.
This field exercise by Ajira Digital Program, Ministry of ICT, Innovations and Youth Affairs and Judiciary teams is meant to set a base for scaling up the judiciary digitization program which is currently in phase two of the pilot program. The Program is supporting the Judiciary to digitize its operations by ensuring all case files are available on the new Case Tracking System (CTS) in order to complement the e-filling system launched by the Judiciary.
